Opening weekend, the 6:10 showing, and a theater full of people who grew up mashing buttons. We went to see the new Street Fighter movie this weekend, and our verdict walking out was simple: it was great. It's loaded with special moves and easter eggs, and it clearly knows exactly who it's for.
Here's the Instagram story we made on the night, complete with pixel sprites and a fireball, because there was no other way to do it.
It's the new live-action Street Fighter from Legendary Pictures and Capcom, distributed by Paramount and directed by Kitao Sakurai. It opened in theaters on October 16, 2026, runs about two hours, and is set in 1993, right in the arcade heyday of Street Fighter II.
The setup: Ryu and Ken, now estranged, get recruited by Chun-Li for the next World Warrior Tournament, where they have to face each other and their own demons along the way. That's all we'll say about the plot.
The cast is stacked, and half the fun is spotting who's playing who:
| Fighter | Played by |
|---|---|
| Ryu | Andrew Koji |
| Ken Masters | Noah Centineo |
| Chun-Li | Callina Liang |
| Akuma | Joe "Roman Reigns" Anoa'i |
| M. Bison | David Dastmalchian |
| Guile | Cody Rhodes |
| Blanka | Jason Momoa |
| Dhalsim | Vidyut Jammwal |
| Balrog | Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson |
| Zangief | Olivier Richters |
| E. Honda | Hirooki Goto |
| Cammy | Mel Jarnson |
| Vega | Orville Peck |
| Dan Hibiki | Andrew Schulz |
Fighting-game fans, keep your eyes open: a handful of well-known streamers and pro players turn up in cameos too.
This is where the movie really delivered for us. There are a lot of signature special moves on screen, and the easter eggs keep coming for anyone who spent time with the games. We're not going to list them here, because catching them yourself is the best part of the experience. Go in with your eyes open and your ears ready for some very familiar sounds.
We make games, so we watch game adaptations a little differently. The ones that work are the ones that respect what players loved in the first place. This one does. It plays like it was made by people who actually played Street Fighter, not people who read a summary of it.
If you grew up with these characters, or just love a good fighting game, go see it. Then come back and play something of ours while you're still fired up.
The pot keeps simmering. ๐ฒ
