Hell has returned to Sanctuary and it has never looked this good. The Lord of Hatred expansion added the Paladin and Warlock classes and is widely considered the game finally delivering on its full potential. This guide is built around the Holy Shield Paladin โ tanky, hits hard with holy damage, and has a shield bash that makes demons regret existing.
๐ฅ Before You Start
What you need to know
1
The Paladin is a Lord of Hatred class โ you need the DLCThe Paladin and Warlock were added in Lord of Hatred. Base game classes are Barbarian, Druid, Necromancer, Rogue, and Sorcerer.
2
The game had a rough launch โ Season 4 onwards is a different gameEarly reviews called Diablo IV unambitious and the endgame thin. From Season 4 forward, Blizzard overhauled loot, quality of life, and build variety significantly. The game you're playing today is meaningfully better in almost every system.
๐ก๏ธ Holy Shield Paladin Build
Your rotation, stats, and what to prioritize
3
Your core skill rotation: Shield Bash โ Holy Bolt โ ConsecrationShield Bash generates Holy Power (your resource), Holy Bolt spends it for burst damage, and Consecration lays a ground AoE of holy fire that melts trash packs. Shield Bash hits harder the higher your Block Chance โ stack it on gear for both offense and defense.
4
Holy damage scales with Sacred Power โ look for it on every gear slotPrioritize Sacred Power on your amulet, rings, and gloves. Your off-hand shield matters more than your weapon โ the shield's Block Value feeds directly into Shield Bash damage. A great shield with a mediocre weapon beats the reverse every time.
5
Divine Shield is your "oh no" button โ always keep it readyDivine Shield makes you fully invulnerable for a short window. Use it to survive a boss's one-shot attack or to reposition. New Paladin players often waste it offensively โ save it for survival. It has a longer cooldown than it looks.
6
Judgment of the Righteous is your elite/boss openerAgainst elites and bosses, drop Judgment before your burst rotation โ it reduces their resistance to holy damage for several seconds. Core loop: Judgment โ Shield Bash (x2) โ Holy Bolt spend. Repeat.
7
Don't neglect Vitality โ you're tanky, not invincibleHoly Shield Paladins feel immortal against basic enemies then get erased by their first elite pack because HP is too low. Keep Vitality as a co-priority stat alongside Sacred Power.

Optimisation tips for handheld play
8
Use the dedicated handheld presetBlizzard added a dedicated handheld preset for Lord of Hatred. Expect ~60 FPS in open world and ~40 FPS in towns and dense combat. That's normal. Cap your frame rate at 40 in Steam's performance overlay for a smoother experience than chasing 60.
9
Map your skills deliberately โ the Paladin is button-hungrySuggested layout: A = Shield Bash, B = Holy Bolt, X = Consecration, Y = Judgment, LT = Divine Shield, RT = Ultimate. Back paddles for potions. Don't leave a shoulder button empty.
10
Lock framerate to 40 โ not 30, not unlimitedUnlimited framerate causes the fans to scream and battery to drain in ~1.5 hours. 30 FPS feels sluggish for Shield Bash timing. 40 FPS is the sweet spot โ smooth enough for melee combat, lasts 2.5โ3 hours per charge. Set it in Steam Quick Access under Battery โ Framerate Limit.
11
Diablo IV requires an internet connection โ even soloThe game is always-online. If you're playing on the go, you need a hotspot. There is no offline mode โ plan accordingly. The connection requirement is light though; even a weak hotspot holds fine.
๐ฑ Lord of Hatred DLC
What's new in the expansion
12
The new level cap is 70 โ Torment IโXII is the endgameLord of Hatred raised the cap from 60 to 70 and replaced the old Nightmare/Torment system with Torment I through XII tiers. At Level 20 you're in the early campaign โ focus on getting through the Mephisto campaign in the Skovos Isles first. It's the best story content Diablo IV has ever produced.
13
Set bonuses are back โ and the Paladin benefits massivelyLord of Hatred reintroduced Set items. The Paladin's Holy Crusader set at 4 pieces makes Shield Bash generate free Holy Power on Block โ a build-defining unlock. Start watching for Set piece drops around Level 40 and save them even if their individual stats seem mediocre. Don't vendor Set pieces.
14
Transmutation lets you reroll one stat on gearAlso new in Lord of Hatred: swap one unwanted stat on gear for something better. Found great armor with no Sacred Power roll? Transmute it. Save it for pieces you'll wear for 5+ levels โ gear turns over fast in the 20โ30 range.
โ๏ธ General Tips
Things that apply to every Paladin run
15
The Skill Tree is deep โ don't lock in too earlyDiablo IV lets you freely respec your skills for a small gold cost. Don't agonize over early choices โ experiment. At Level 20 you should be testing things, not cementing your final build. Your definitive build will emerge around Level 40โ50 when Set pieces start dropping.
16
Do the side quests โ they tell the best storiesThe side quests are where the quiet, grim human stories live โ survivors, cultists, towns on the edge. They also drop solid gear and give Renown. Don't blow past them.
17
Raise your Renown in each region โ it gives Paragon PointsEach of the five regions has a Renown meter filled by completing side quests, discovering dungeons, and finding Waypoints. Max Renown gives bonus Skill Points AND Paragon Points (post-60 power).
18
Dungeons drop Legendary Aspects โ they're your real powerCompleting a dungeon for the first time unlocks a Legendary Aspect in your Codex of Power โ a reusable power you can imprint onto any gear piece. Check which Aspects benefit Shield Bash and holy damage and clear those dungeons early.
